Knowing the Action in Poker
When it comes to playing poker online, the biggest weapons that a poker player has is his actions. In addition to all of that, whether the poker player chooses to bet, raise, of check/raise will vary from poker game to poker game. In general, a person will want to bet or raise whenever they feel that they have the best hand. This is done to increase the amount of bets in the pot and also to get the most money out of the other bets. How much one should bet will depend on the particular poker table. When playing poker online, it is also a good idea to know when to bet; before the flop, after the flop, at the turn, or the river. In terms of pre-flop betting, it is a general rule of thumb that the first player to enter the pot should raise with any sort of poker cards that will give them a chance to stay in the game.
However, this will also depend on where the player is positioned at the poker table. For instance, if a poker player is one spot off the dealer button and no one has entered the pot, then it would do them good to raise with a pair of poker cards, because chances are good that they have the best poker hand (for the moment). In the situation that the action goes to the poker player, and there have been calls before their turn, they could consider a raise with a really strong hand, or call with an average but potentially strong poker hand. If there has been a raise in front of the poker player, then they can re-raise with some poker hands or call with any weaker poker hands.
The key is to prevent being put in a vulnerable position. The exception to this would be calling with higher suited connectors or small pairs if there have been at least three or four other callers in front of the poker player with that pair. This will ensure that they are receiving the proper pot odds to make a call. Note that this person with a low pair is hoping to flop two pair, a set, or a straight or flush draw in these cases; otherwise, they should fold on the flop if they miss. Additionally, someone may play a very strong poker hand, such as a pair of Aces, deceptively Pre-Flop. The intention would be to check/raise the opponents at the poker table when someone raises behind that player.
This play depends on being relatively certain that someone will raise again and should be made when the opponents seem overly aggressive with weak holdings, or relatively tight and quick to fold to raises from early position. The Flop will give the poker player a much better idea of the value of poker hands in relation to the probable value of opponents' hands. Most beginner players tend to make most of their bets after the flop. For instance, if someone chose to raise from an Early Position with a pair of 10s and had four callers, they will typically fear cards with a higher face value, pairs even.
If the Flop should then come with two higher cards like an Ace and a King, then the chances of the pair of 10s being the best poker hand are much slimmer than they were Pre-Flop. On the other hand, in the event that the Flop comes with all undercards that are not of the same suit or connected, then there is a very good chance that the pair of 10s is the best and the poker player should lead out with a bet.
