Know Your Poker Game
Like running, a poker game is just as much an internal game than it is competition. One of the most important things to know when playing online poker is that a person needs to know their own poker strategies and styles in order to play a decent poker game. A close second is, of course, is knowing how other poker players play poker. People make it a job to improve their poker game. It does indeed, become a task to learn not only the general poker strategies, but also the opponents' poker strategies, poker hands, and of course, one's own style of poker. People say that the most successful poker players are the ones that spend the large amounts of time playing poker online and learning their own style of poker.
It seems that when someone has control over the poker game, they have a control over all of the poker players. Typically the poker player that has the most control over the poker game comes out on top. Before trying to read other poker players at the poker table, and figuring out how everyone else played, a person needs to know their own style and how they could benefit from their own playing as opposed to playing off of everybody else at the poker table.
Generally there are two types of poker styles people play with; the tight players, and the loose. Loose poker players are the poker players that are willing to play almost anything just to see the flop. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because they are looking to see if their cards have a chance for a good poker hand. But it also gives the other players at the table an opportunity to figure out how someone plays. If a person plays loosely and buys more cards, they could land something really big, and from there, it's a completely different game. The consequence of playing loose is that it gets expensive fast. But for those that have the money, it won't hurt. If someone isn't conscious of their own style, it leaves the door wide open for opponents at the poker table to figure them out.
The other style of play would be Tight, where a poker player waits for something quite high and then starts playing. If someone is a tight player in a game like Texas Hold'em, they would usually wait until they are dealt a strong poker hand, and then make a move. If someone is dealt anything worth playing, they would usually just toss the hand and wait for something better. This style can keep someone in the poker game for a long time, but if they don't make a move eventually, it can hurt them in the long run. These types of poker players don't generally notice their bankroll starting to diminish. They might find that when they get the poker cards they have been waiting for, they will not have the funds to make a big pot.
It really doesn't matter what style a person chooses to play, but it's very important that they know their own style. If someone isn't conscious of their own style, it leaves the door wide open for opponents to figure out. Probably the biggest benefit of knowing one's own style is that they can start to mix it up after a while.
